In the spring of 2025, we opened our doors in the heart of The Hague, bringing authentic Argentine empanadas to the Netherlands. But this wasn’t just another restaurant opening. It was the continuation of a story that began decades ago, across oceans and generations.

From Argentina to Spain , and now to the cobblestone streets of Den Haag, we carry forward a family tradition wrapped in golden pastry. Fresh ingredients, honest flavors, and the warmth of home that’s what you’ll taste in every bite.

The story of Tio bigotes

Late 1940's
The Great Adventure Begins

In the late 1940s, my grandfather and his brother left their village of Lugo, Spain.

They boarded a ship across the Atlantic, chasing a better life.

After weeks at sea, they arrived in Argentina a country that embraced them completely.

What they didn’t know yet: it would become their home forever.

1950's
A passion for empanadas

My great uncle, affectionately called Tio Bigotes, soon found his place in the kitchen.

He started with the Galician empanadas from his childhood, then gradually infused them with Argentine flavor.

Local ingredients, bold spices, and a love for home cooking made them something unique.

Word spread fast — his empanadas became a streetfood favorite in the neighborhood.

2007
Back to the roots

His story never left me. I still remember those afternoons in his workshop, learning the secrets of his dough and fillings.

In 2007, I made a decision: to continue his legacy.

I returned to Spain this time not to settle, but to share something timeless.

Tío Bigotes was reborn.

2009
The first location

In 2009, the first official Tio Bigotes opened in Catalonia.

A space where memories met flavor and tradition became something to taste.

It started as a tribute, but soon evolved into a fast-growing concept.

The empanada had returned to the streets — fresh, fast, and full of soul.

Today and in the future
From legacy to brand

The empanadas were simply amazing, we tried 5 different flavors and non of them disappointed. It has the student korting that is also nice if you are short in budget. The only thing I would change is the music, it was all corridos Mexicanos when we were eating empanadas argentinas, I personally prefer something more traditional such as intoxicados or Andres Calamaro

Excellent service, super tasty empanadas. Verry nice coffee too (&cheap 1,95 for espresso)! Perfect for a lunch, Quick stop or just a study / work place. They offer Wifi & charging spots.10/10

Seriously perfect empanadas! The vacio, provoleta y chimichurri I highly recommend, they even have alfajor cookies. You can tell from the ambience that they love what they’re doing. Small seating area but very cozy and clean. A+++

Delicious empanadas 😍. Finally a good place to make an stop and eat a good latin snak 💖. The restaurant is small but cousy clean and nice to have a small snak and continous with the shopping.

Absolutely amazing! We tried the Criolla, Vacio, Chorizo, and the Smash Burger — it’s hard to pick a favorite. We can’t wait for our next time in Den Haag to try more empanadas! The atmosphere and the staff were also very nice.
